Growing Veggies And Fruit Organically: Tips And Tricks

The popularity of holistic living is increasing in the wake of the growth of organic trends. Anyone living this kind of life usually has to organically grow their own herbs and plants to maintain their way of living. The following advice below helps to improve organic horticulture skills.

When winter arrives, transfer some plants into the house to save them. Choose the plants that are most likely to survive. Carefully dig near the roots and transfer those plants into a flower pot.

Coffee Grounds

Sometimes the soil you want to use for your garden has a high alkaline content. Combine coffee grounds with the soil to reduce this. Coffee grounds are an inexpensive way to increase the acid level in your soil. The plants will be healthier, leading to more delicious home-grown veggies.

Do you want fresh mint leaves without having to worry about them growing too quickly? Control their expansion by confining them to a large pot. You can bury the container so the top is flush with the ground if desired, but the container’s walls will prevent the roots from spreading so that the plant won’t take over your entire garden.

Instead of leaving clumps of irises intact, divide them so that your flowers can grow in a more healthy manner. Increase your iris population when you divide up overgrown clumps. When the foliage dies, take the bulbous irises and lift them. The bulbs will then split naturally in the palm of your hand and if they’re re-planted, they can flower next year. Rhizomes may need to be divided by using a knife. Cut new pieces from the outside and discard the old center. Each piece should retain a minimum of one sturdy offshoot capable of spurting new growth. Replant immediately.

A great garden starts from the seeds and not from the plants. Planting seeds is the most eco-friendly way to start a new garden. It’s better for your garden, in particular, because transplants have high failure rates; whereas, sprouting a seed and growing a plant in the same conditions is better. Additionally, it’s better for the environment, because the plastic pots used by most greenhouses are generally not recycled and are cluttering landfills.

Always fertilize your garden. While a lot of people use manure, it is better to choose fertilizer from a reputable company, as this will reduce the risk of any pathogens getting into your soil. Many types of fertilizers are available. The type you utilize is not critical; just be sure to use one.

Give them a boost by watering them with the cooled water that is left after steaming vegetables. Add coffee grounds or tea leaves to the soil of acid-loving plants like rhododendron and gardenia. If fungus is an issue, Chamomile tea sprinkled on the plant may be effective.

Consider planting strawberries, especially ones that are everbearing, for your garden if you have small children. Your children will enjoy being able to pick strawberries and will be ready to help you if they can get something sweet to eat.
